The Port of Oakland reported a significant rebound in container traffic in July 2025, driven largely by importers accelerating shipments to avoid the August 1 tariff deadlines. Both imports and exports showed sharp increases, highlighting how trade policy changes can quickly influence cargo flows.
Imports Surge to Record Highs
Loaded imports rose from 70,334 TEUs in June to 92,392 TEUs in July, marking a 31.4% jump and the highest monthly import total so far in 2025. According to Maritime Director Bryan Brandes, this “front-loading” of cargo was the main driver behind the surge. Vessel activity mirrored the trend, with 95 vessels calling the port in July, up 23.4% from June, as carriers adjusted schedules to handle the demand.
Exports and Year-to-Date Performance
Exports also gained momentum, climbing 10.1% to 65,595 TEUs in July compared to June. Together, full imports and exports reached 157,987 TEUs for the month, up more than 21%. Year-to-date, the port has handled 1,346,022 TEUs, maintaining a 1.9% lead over 2024’s pace. Imports are 3.5% higher year-on-year, while exports are up 0.3%.
July’s surge highlights the immediate impact of tariff announcements on trade patterns, as businesses raced to move cargo before higher costs set in. While the Port of Oakland benefited from the strong July performance, officials expect activity to level off in the coming months as front-loaded shipments move through the supply chain.
