The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Germany’s HGK-Group have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding aimed at accelerating low-carbon logistics between Rotterdam and North Rhine-Westphalia. The partnership focuses on establishing multimodal transport routes for green hydrogen, renewable fuels, and CO₂ handling, strengthening the Rhine corridor as a backbone for Europe’s industrial decarbonisation.
Building Multimodal Pathways for Green Energy Transport
Under the agreement, both organisations will work together to create efficient transport solutions for future energy carriers such as green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and liquid hydrogen.
HGK-Group’s strong inland waterway fleet, stake in freight railway operator RheinCargo, and management of multiple Rhine ports positions it as a key logistics provider for energy-intensive industries in western Germany.
The collaboration aims to integrate these assets with Rotterdam’s expanding infrastructure for renewable fuels, enabling a seamless supply chain for green energy from the port to industrial hubs across the Rhine region.
Strengthening CCUS and Industrial Decarbonisation Initiatives
A core element of the partnership is the development of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) transport networks. This includes cross-border movement of CO₂ from industrial sites in North Rhine-Westphalia to storage facilities accessible via Rotterdam.
A joint coordination platform will meet quarterly to drive projects focused on CO₂ transport, new transshipment hubs, and storage readiness. Both partners emphasise that improving the resilience of the Rhine corridor is essential for supporting the growing chemical cluster in the Cologne region and boosting Europe’s overall energy transition efforts.
The agreement between the Port of Rotterdam Authority and HGK-Group marks a significant step toward creating a future-ready, low-carbon logistics corridor in northwest Europe. By combining Rotterdam’s position as a major energy import hub with HGK’s inland logistics expertise, the partnership aims to accelerate the deployment of green fuels and CCUS solutions, strengthening the Rhine corridor as a central route for sustainable industrial supply chains.
