Port of Shimizu Sees Overall Dip in July Despite Continued Foreign-Trade Growth

8

Container traffic at the Port of Shimizu experienced a mixed performance in July, with strong foreign-trade activity offset by a decline in domestic movement. This led to a slight dip in overall throughput for the month despite five consecutive months of growth in foreign-trade containers. Over the first seven months of the year, the port maintained a positive overall growth trajectory.

Foreign-Trade Containers

The Port of Shimizu’s foreign-trade container traffic continued its positive trend in July, with 35,521 TEUs handled, marking a 2.4% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth was driven by a strong performance in imports, which climbed 7.3% to 17,343 TEUs. Exports also saw a modest increase of 0.5% to 13,291 TEUs. However, the number of empty containers dropped by 7.5%.

In contrast to foreign trade, domestic container traffic at the port saw a significant decline, falling 18.8% to 8,236 TEUs in July. This decrease was the primary factor that caused the port’s overall throughput for the month to drop by 2.4% to 43,757 TEUs.

Year-to-Date Performance (January-July)

For the first seven months of the year, the Port of Shimizu’s foreign-trade container volume grew by 2.1% to 234,912 TEUs. This was supported by a 2.7% increase in imports and a 0.4% rise in exports. Empty container traffic also saw a 4.8% gain. Despite the dip in domestic traffic in July, the port’s overall throughput for the year-to-date period remained positive, increasing by 1% to 298,288 TEUs.
