Ports Australia has published its first-ever State of Trade report, shedding light on the crucial role ports play in Australia’s economy. The report reveals that Australian ports handle 99 percent of the country’s international trade, facilitating the flow of $650 billion worth of goods annually.

According to the report, ports across Australia are responsible for nearly 700,000 jobs and contribute around $264 billion to the national economy. These findings underscore the importance of ports as not only trade gateways but also vital components of the country’s economic framework.

Port Authority of NSW Praises Report’s Findings

The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) has welcomed the report, which highlights the essential role ports in NSW play in the Australian economy. Annually, ports in the state manage $127 billion worth of international trade and move 203 million tonnes of cargo, supporting 108,000 jobs statewide.

Philip Holliday, CEO of Port Authority of NSW, expressed pride in the organization’s contributions to Australia’s maritime sector, noting the substantial economic growth and job creation ports have driven. Over the past decade, the Port Authority has facilitated a $1 trillion contribution to the economy, promoting growth through safe and sustainable operations.

Mr. Holliday emphasized that the State of Trade report underscores the importance of ports in daily life, highlighting their role in driving trade worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
