Potential strikes in November-December at Portugal ports could cause delays for vessels calling there and disrupt operations, reports Safety4sea.
Port administration strikes halt ship operations
The National Union of Workers of Port Administrations has declared a strike on the provision of work, in relation to all and any operations and activities in which they must or may intervene, according to the schedule and conditions indicated below:
- From 00:00 on November 21, 2025, until 24:00 on November 22, 2025.
- From 00:00 on November 25, 2025, until 24:00 on November 26, 2025.
- From 00:00 on November 28, 2025, until 24:00 on November 29, 2025.
- From 00:00 on December 2, 2025, until 24:00 on December 4, 2025.
- From 00:00 on December 9, 2025, until 24:00 on December 9, 2025.
- From 00:00 on December 12, 2025, until 24:00 on December 13, 2025.
As stated, the strike notice does not apply to the ports in Madeira and the Azores. It also does not apply to cargo ship operations in mainland ports if those ships are directly going to or coming from Madeira or the Azores.
This exemption is in place because the port administrations in those regions have always followed the same employment rules as mainland ports, and it is expected they will continue to do so.
Furthermore, for minimum services during the strike, workers will be assigned based on their normal work schedules or duty rosters. No tasks or maneuvers should begin if they cannot be stopped or completed before the strike starts. Striking workers can only be asked to work if minimum services cannot be covered by non-striking workers under normal conditions.
