One of the world’s largest marine fuel cell systems orders to date-instantly valued at around SEK 165 million for a leading Italian marine OEM manufacturer been concluded. This is a giant step forward for decarbonizing the marine industry. Deliveries will commence mid-year 2025 and complete by that year’s end, reports PoweCellGroup.
Order Details
The order is split into three key components, totalling 56 units of the Marine System 225. These will primarily be installed in commercial cruise ships as auxiliary power for the inner electricity systems. Fuel cell systems will make up over 6.3 MW in total power.
A 3.2 MW marine power solution is also being constructed for the OEM’s internal testbed and another 3.2 MW solution will be installed on a separate vessel.
A Key Step Toward Marine Industry Decarbonization
This order is a tipping point in the marine industry’s move toward greener solutions. Installation of these hydrogen fuel cell systems will be among the largest of this type. It constitutes a big contribution towards the reduction of carbon emissions within the sector.
CEO’s Statement
The PowerCell Group CEO, Richard Berkling, said he was proud to work together with an Italian OEM manufacturer. As the fuel cell system offers an interesting set of climate-friendly virtues, noise reduction, too was counted among these.

This order confirms the importance of hydrogen-electric solutions for the marine industry.”
Advancing Towards a Commercial and OEM-Driven Market
Berkling said that the contract not only strengthens the company’s position in the marine fuel cell segment but also reflects a shift towards a commercially focused and OEM-driven market.
“It also marks a transition towards a more commercial and OEM-driven market, a direction that we have been striving for. With significant deliveries to several marine projects this year, this new order reaffirms our position as a leading supplier of hydrogen-electric solutions to this segment,” added Berkling.
This order further strengthens the position of hydrogen-electric technology in future marine power systems and further steps in the decarbonization of global shipping.
