On July 21, a Tanzanian flagged product tanker was reportedly sanctioned by the United Nations for its involvement in illegal activities.

What happened?

The product tanker ‘Capricorn’ listed as vessel transporting gas oil was sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council Committee. The tanker was alleged to have been involved in illegal activities like exporting gas oil illicitly from Libya.

Denied entry:

The complaint was lodged by the Government of Libya to the United Nations. Based on investigation carried out the tanker was found guilty by the UN for illicit activities. Hence, the tanker has been sanctioned, which means that the tanker is not allowed to entry any port and it has been denied permission to transport or discharge cargo operations hereafter.

The sanction is valid from 21 July to 21 October 2017, unless it is terminated earlier by the Committee pursuant to paragraph 12 of resolution 2146 (2014).

The product tanker has been recently spotted off Cyprus.
