Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has set a record as the first container terminal in Malaysia, handling more than 12.25 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2024, reports New Straits Times.

The achievement surpassed PTP’s previous record of 11.2 million TEUs in 2021, further solidifying its position as Malaysia’s leading and largest transshipment hub.

PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said it is gratifying to witness how the port has risen to the occasion, embracing challenges with courage and transforming them into opportunities for growth and innovation.

He added that PTP record-breaking performance underscores its indispensable role in global supply chains. “This milestone is a testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work of the entire PTP team. By seamlessly handling such substantial container volumes, we have consistently delivered exceptional services to our valued customers and partners, contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth and reaffirming PTP’s position as one of the world’s most efficient and high-volume container terminals,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, PTP chief executive officer Mark Hardiman emphasised its ability to maintain stable and strong productivity levels, even amid surging volumes. He said the stability is crucial and adds significant value for its customers.

It has always been our commitment to help our customers achieve their schedule reliability, especially during a time of global supply chain disruptions, and we are proud to deliver this with no congestion,” he added.

Mark said PTP aims to sustain the momentum and achieve even greater milestones in 2025 and beyond. “We have made extensive preparations for the future, focusing not only on port asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements, but also on advancing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, strengthening safety policies and driving our digitalisation strategies.” “These efforts ensure continuous improvements and expansions as we anticipate significant increase in volume in the coming year,” he added.

The 12 millionth TEU was recorded around 7pm on Dec 23 last year. PTP set multiple records during the year. On Sept 22, it completed 14,036 quayside moves in a single 12-hour shift. In July, it reached its highest monthly volume, handling 1,115,181 TEUs. Since May, the terminal has consistently handled over one million TEUs each month for seven consecutive months.
