To cease the shelling, Putin demands Mariupol’s capitulation as reported by The Guardian.

Evacuating inhabitants

Vladimir Putin emphasised in a phone chat with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Tuesday night that the Russian shelling of Mariupol will halt only when Ukrainian troops surrender, according to the Kremlin.

According to French officials, Putin promised to consider measures to evacuate inhabitants from the southern Ukrainian city, which has become a “catastrophic” situation, according to the Élysée Palace.

“Civilians must be safeguarded and must leave the city if they desire, according to a statement from the French government.

They must be able to obtain food, drink, and the medications they require. The city’s siege by Russian armed forces is linked to the deteriorating humanitarian situation.”

A proposal to evacuate the city has been offered to Russian President Vladimir Putin by France, Turkey, Greece, and other humanitarian organisations.

Putin reportedly informed Macron that he would “consider” the suggestion, according to officials.

Humanitarian situation

However, according to the Kremlin’s readout of the talk, Putin stressed to Macron that Ukrainian “nationalist extremists” surrender.

According to the Kremlin, Putin stated that Ukrainian nationalist militants must cease resisting and lay down their arms in order to overcome the grave humanitarian situation in this city.

Putin also provided Macron with “full information regarding Russian military steps taken to provide emergency humanitarian assistance and secure the safe evacuation” of residents from Mariupol, according to the statement.
