Russia Weighing Use of Chemical Weapons in Ukraine?

  • The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
  • Russia’s defence ministry has accused Kyiv, without providing evidence, of planning a chemical attack.
  • Hundreds of thousands of civilians are suffering through Russian bombardments.

According to US President Joe Biden, Russia’s baseless assertions that Kyiv has biological and chemical weapons show that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering deploying them himself in his fight against Ukraine as reported by US News.

False flags

Putin’s “back is against the wall and now he’s talking about new false flags he’s setting up including, asserting that we in America have biological as well as chemical weapons in Europe, simply not true,” Biden said at a Business Roundtable event.

“They are also suggesting that Ukraine has biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine. That’s a clear sign he’s considering using both of those.”

A request for comment from the Russian embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

The remarks matched previous statements by US and partner officials accusing Russia of disseminating an unverified notion that Ukraine had a biological weapons programme as a possible prelude to launching its own biological or chemical attacks.

.Chemical strike

Russia’s defence ministry has accused Kyiv of plotting a chemical strike on its own people, without giving evidence, in order to accuse Moscow of employing chemical weapons in the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.

Earlier this month, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with Nikolay Patrushev, secretary of Russia’s Security Council, warning him of consequences for “any possible Russian decision to use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine.” The White House did not specify what those consequences would be.

Biden also said Russia used a hypersonic missile to destroy a weapons depot on Saturday “because it’s the only thing they can get through with absolute certainty.”

Special military operation

Biden was verifying Russia’s use of such an advanced missile, but the impact of the attack was uncertain, according to an administration official on Monday evening. The legitimacy of the Russian account has already been questioned by a senior US defence official.

Russia’s incursion, which it describes as a “special military operation” aimed at disarming Ukraine, has mostly stagnated, failing to conquer any major cities but wreaking havoc on civilian regions.

Ukraine said on Monday that it would not comply with Russian ultimatums after Moscow demanded that it stop defending besieged Mariupol, where Russian bombardments have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
