On 27 August, Thai-listed shipowner RCL (Regional Container Lines) named two new 12,000 TEU vessels, the Ussama Bhum and Varanya Bhum, at the Hiroshima shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding. The Ussama Bhum has already been deployed on RCL’s Middle East trade routes, while the Varanya Bhum is scheduled for delivery in December. These new vessels are among the largest in RCL’s growing fleet.
Statement on Fleet Growth and Service Expansion
RCL Chairman Dr. Jamlong Atikul emphasized the significance of these new ships, stating that the naming of the Ussama Bhum and Varanya Bhum marks not only the expansion of the fleet but also the continued evolution of RCL’s service offerings. He highlighted that these vessels will enhance the company’s capabilities, enabling RCL to better meet global customer demands with greater efficiency and sustainability.
Introduction of 7,000 TEU Vessels
On 3 September, RCL named two additional vessels, the Hemma Bhum and Itthi Bhum, at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Yard in China. These 7,000 TEU ships were immediately put into service with RCL and its partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL).
Future Fleet Expansion Plans
In addition to the recent deliveries, RCL signed contracts with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) for two more 7,000 TEU dual-fuel ready vessels, which are slated for delivery in 2026 and 2028. These newbuildings will further bolster RCL’s capacity and commitment to sustainable shipping solutions.
