Real-Time Environmental Data Powers New Ship Drift Prediction Technology

9

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has introduced a new technological tool, developed in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), aimed at significantly improving maritime safety and emergency preparedness. This service focuses on predicting the movement of vessels that have lost power.

Ship Drift Trajectory Prediction Service

The new service is a state-of-the-art computer program designed to predict the drift paths of disabled vessels. The Indian Register of Shipping launched it in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay).

Enhancing Maritime Safety and Emergency Response

The tool is intended to strengthen maritime risk management and enhance emergency response planning for vessels that have lost propulsion power. By predicting drift paths, maritime authorities and emergency response teams can plan and execute search and rescue operations with greater speed and precision.

Key Benefits of Predictive Capability

The predictive technology is essential for safeguarding maritime assets and infrastructure. Its capabilities are vital for:

  • Preventing groundings.
  • Avoiding collisions with coastal facilities or marine infrastructure.
  • Rerouting nearby vessels to ensure navigational safety.

Technology and User Experience

The service allows response teams to forecast vessel drift by using real-time environmental conditions. It features a user-friendly interface for seamless extraction of simulation results. Additionally, a built-in post-processing feature generates simulation videos, which are used for enhanced analysis and visualization of the vessel’s predicted drift path.
