Over the past week, from May 13th to May 19th, 2025, the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) received reports of three incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia, reports Safety4sea.
New Incidents
The ReCAAP ISC (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre) has received reports of three incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia.
All three incidents occurred while the ships were underway off Pulau Cula, Indonesia, within the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of the Singapore Strait (SS).
ReCAAP ISC has updated its advisory for the Sulu-Celebes Seas on February 14, 2025. This update follows a downgrade of the threat level regarding the “Abduction of crew for ransom in the Sulu-Celebes Seas.”
As a result of this reassessment, ReCAAP ISC now recommends that ships “exercise vigilance when transiting the Sulu-Celebes Seas and report incidents to the operation centers of the Philippines and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM).”
Furthermore, ships are advised to maintain continuous communication with the relevant authorities while transiting through this area.
Recommendations Given
Ship masters and their crews are obligated to report all incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships to the nearest coastal state and their respective flag state. For guidance on reporting, they should refer to the “Poster on the Contact Details for Reporting of Incidents of Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia.”
Beyond reporting, masters and crew are also advised to exercise continuous vigilance and implement appropriate preventive measures. For detailed guidance on these measures, they should consult the “Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia.”
