- Lanzhou, the provincial capital of northwestern province Gansu, was placed under lockdown.
- Residents were told not to leave home except for emergencies.
- Over 100 cases were declared.
China placed a city of 4 million under lockdown on Tuesday in a bid to stamp out a domestic coronavirus spike, with residents told not to leave home except for emergencies as reported by News18.
Limitations on locals
The limitations were imposed after China reported 29 new domestic illnesses, including six cases in Lanzhou, Gansu’s provincial capital.
The “entrance and leave of inhabitants” will be rigorously restricted, according to Lanzhou officials, and confined to required supplies or medical treatment.
“Closed management will be implemented in all sorts of residential communities,” police said in a statement.
The contagious Delta variant
The new limits follow tight stay-at-home orders issued to tens of thousands of people in northern China, who already have limited access to tourist sites and are instructed not to leave the city unless absolutely essential.
China’s most recent outbreak has been connected to the contagious Delta type, with more than 100 cases reported in the last week.
More infections may surface as testing intensifies in the coming days to combat the outbreak, which has been connected to a group of domestic visitors, according to health experts.
