The Hong Kong government has taken a stance to enforce strict rules for implementing sulphur emission rules in ships.

Improve air quality:

The HK government has made plans present points to improve air quality. The government has been enforcing vessels to use cleaner fuel while in Hong Kong waters.

Non-compliance ships to be banned:

Lawmakers at Legco ‘s Environmental Affairs Panel have said that ships  that do not comply with rules will be banned from using sulphur content exceeding 0.5 percent by weight from January 1, 2019.

The proposal would bring the city into line with national efforts to establish emission control areas, specifically one in the Pearl River Delta.

Move considered to improve air quality:

But Simon Ng, an independent consultant on air quality and transport issues, said there were suggestions from different sectors in Hong Kong to tighten rules further. “From 0.5 which is the requirement for vessels at berth in Hong Kong right now, to go down to 0.1 percent”.

He told Richard Pyne that the enforcement of tighter controls will bring considerable improvement to the air quality in the region.
