Refloat Attempt Of Grounded Ship In St. Lawrence River Delayed

94

The next attempt to refloat the grounded ship, in the St. Lawrence River won’t happen until Sunday. To lighten the vessel and improve the chances of refloating it, the ship’s owner plans to unload over 3,000 metric tons of corn. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by vessels navigating the St. Lawrence River, especially during challenging weather conditions, according to CBC.

Revised Plan

The plan to refloat the grounded cargo ship has been revised. Instead of starting on January 1st, the operation will now begin on Thursday with the unloading of the cargo. The refloating attempt is scheduled for Sunday.

Rain in the forecast could potentially delay the unloading process as corn cannot be unloaded in wet conditions. However, the coast guard reports that the ship’s condition remains stable with no signs of pollution and a crew of 20 on board. The Cyprus-flagged 185-meter bulk carrier ran aground near Vercheres, Quebec, on December 24th after experiencing a power failure.
