Fugro, a leading geo-data specialist, has expanded its Blue Essence® uncrewed surface vessel (USV) fleet with the introduction of Fugro Vaquita. This 12-meter USV has achieved Category 0 approval from the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency, making it the largest USV to operate fully remotely. The expansion reflects Fugro’s commitment to advancing technology for safer and more sustainable marine projects.
Category 0 Approval and Remote Operation
Fugro Vaquita has secured Category 0 approval, the highest level for autonomous vessels, allowing unrestricted access for marine projects further offshore. Both the USV and electrical remotely operated vehicle (eROV) are remotely controlled from Fugro’s global network of remote operations centers (ROCs). This innovative approach not only enhances safety but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint, with emissions up to 95% lower than conventional support vessels.
Environmental Impact and Global Monitoring
The remote operation capability minimizes personnel exposure to high-risk offshore environments and contributes to Fugro’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. The USV’s environmental benefits are complemented by the ability to monitor and control vessels globally. This facilitates faster decision-making, access to near real-time data, and optimizes project schedules, ensuring safety, and maximizing asset performance.
Partnership and European Operations
Developed in collaboration with SEA-KIT, Fugro Vaquita marks the second Blue Essence® USV operating in European waters. In 2023, Fugro Orca, another vessel from the fleet, completed various projects, including asset integrity and seabed surveys, showcasing the effectiveness and versatility of Fugro’s advanced autonomous marine technology.
