Renault Joins UECC’s Sail For Change Programme To Cut Supply Chain Emissions

Renault Group has become the fifth major automaker to join United European Car Carriers’ (UECC) Sail for Change (S4C) programme, a fuel-switching initiative aimed at reducing shipping emissions through the use of liquefied biomethane (LBM), also known as bioLNG. The move strengthens Renault’s decarbonisation strategy as it works toward net zero emissions across its supply chain.

Partnership for Cleaner Logistics

Pilot shipments of Renault vehicles began on 1 July from Zeebrugge, Belgium, to Esbjerg, Denmark. Under S4C, UECC estimates that Renault will achieve an annual saving of around 1,000 tonnes of Scope 3 CO2 emissions.

UECC CEO Glenn Edvardsen welcomed Renault’s participation, noting that the programme has gained momentum since its launch last year, enabling significant investment in sustainable maritime fuel technologies.

Decarbonisation Through BioLNG

UECC has pioneered the use of bioLNG across its dual and multi-fuel LNG Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). This enabled the company to cut more than 107,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2024, with projections to reach nearly 155,000 tonnes in 2025.

BioLNG, supplied under an agreement with Titan Clean Fuels, is central to UECC’s strategy to achieve a 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and net zero by 2040. The company also plans to expand the S4C programme to include other sustainable fuels such as eLNG.

Strategic Fit with Renault’s Climate Goals

Renault’s participation aligns with its Renaulution plan, which targets a 27% reduction in logistics emissions by 2030, net zero in Europe by 2040, and globally by 2050. By partnering with UECC, Renault gains access to certified carbon-neutral transport while also avoiding potential regulatory surcharges under FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System.

UECC’s Energy & Sustainability Manager, Daniel Gent, highlighted that S4C offers customers a direct and measurable impact on decarbonising their supply chains through a combination of sustainable fuels, energy efficiency measures, and onshore electrification.

With Renault’s entry into the Sail for Change programme, UECC is reinforcing its role as a frontrunner in sustainable shipping. The collaboration not only strengthens Renault’s green logistics strategy but also demonstrates how regulatory pressure and market demand are driving meaningful emissions reductions in maritime transport. By investing in alternative fuels like bioLNG, UECC and its customers are setting new benchmarks for decarbonisation in global supply chains.
