Spanish energy company Enagás, along with Repsol, has carried out the first pipe-to-ship LNG bunkering of a container ship at the Port of Cartagena, reports Ship Technology.
First Pipe-to-Ship LNG Bunkering
The operation, which was completed earlier this month, involved CMA CGM Group company Containerships’ Borealis. The Cartagena terminal was the first European infrastructure to perform a pipe-to-ship bunkering operation in 2017.
‘At present, it has already performed 10 and has become a European benchmark in this type of operation thanks to the technological investment made in our infrastructure,’ Enagás said.
The Cartagena terminal has a small scale dock where the fuel is supplied to vessels via hoses from a berth connected to the terminal. As previously reported, the number of LNG bunkering operations in Spain rose from 741 in 2020 to 943 in 2021, a year-on-year (y-o-y) increase of 27%.
