The maritime industry is experiencing a significant push towards decarbonization, evident in a notable 8% YoY increase in orders for vessels with alternative fuel propulsion, reaching a total of 298 in 2023. Methanol emerged as a mainstream choice, closely competing with LNG, while ammonia gained momentum with 11 vessel orders.
AFI Platform Enhancements for Transition Acceleration
DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, a crucial industry tool, received upgrades to foster data-sharing and expedite the transition to zero-carbon shipping. The platform registered a total of 1281 ships, reflecting the industry’s commitment to newbuilds and retrofits geared for alternative fuel usage.
Industry Response to IMO’s Mandates
In response to heightened pressure and stricter emission targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in July 2023, the maritime sector is strategically exploring various decarbonization avenues. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO Maritime at DNV, emphasizes the need for tangible emission reduction measures alongside fuel choices to ensure impactful results leading up to 2030. Methanol led the alternative fuel preferences in 2023, particularly in container ships, reflecting a significant shift towards greener practices in maritime operations.
