Rotterdam Sees Slight Drop in Fuel Bunkering, LNG Demand Up 52%

  • 9.8 million tonnes of fuel bunkered in Rotterdam in 2024, down from 9.9 million tonnes in 2023.
  • LNG demand increased by 52% to 0.94 million m3 in 2024.
  • Bio-methanol demand surged to 4,000 tonnes in 2024, up from 750 tonnes in 2023.
  • Bio-blended fuel demand remained stable at 750,000 tonnes, despite mid-year fluctuations.

In 2024, the maritime shipping industry bunkered 9.8 million tonnes of fuel in Rotterdam, showing a modest decrease from 9.9 million tonnes in 2023. The demand for traditional fuels such as fuel oil, marine gas oil, and other related fuels was 0.9% lower than in the previous year. However, a notable trend was the rebound in LNG demand, which increased by 52%, reaching 0.94 million m3 compared to 0.62 million m3 in 2023, as LNG demand returned to previous levels after the period of high gas prices, according to Port of Rotterdam.

Rising Demand for Bio-Methanol and Bio-Blended Fuels

2024 also saw a significant rise in the demand for bio-methanol following its inaugural bunkering in the Port of Rotterdam in 2023. The demand surged to nearly 4,000 tonnes, a sharp increase from 750 tonnes in 2023. Meanwhile, the demand for bio-blended fuels exhibited a dichotomy. There was a slight growth in the first half of 2024, followed by a sharp decline in the second half. The most significant drop was in bio-blended VLSFO, the largest bio-blend, which was impacted by the European Union’s anti-dumping duties on Chinese biofuels, leading to greater availability of bio-blended fuels in Asia.

Despite these fluctuations, the overall demand for bio-blends remained consistent with 2023 levels, totaling 750,000 tonnes in 2024.
