- Marine distillate sales fell by 4%, with MGO steady and MDO down 10%.

In the second quarter of 2024, the Port of Rotterdam experienced a mixed performance in bunker fuel sales, according to recent figures from the Port of Rotterdam Authority, reports Engine.
Bunker fuel sales
Total conventional bunker fuel sales at the port grew, driven by increased sales of Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). However, the total sales of conventional bunker fuels were about 11% lower compared to the same period last year.
Sales of marine distillates, which encompass marine gasoil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO), saw a 4% decrease, amounting to 369,000 metric tons (mt). While MGO sales remained relatively stable, MDO sales dropped by 10% from the previous quarter.
Marine fuel oil sales, which include VLSFO, High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO), and Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (ULSFO), increased by 4% compared to Q1 2024, due to a rise in VLSFO sales. Despite this quarterly growth, marine fuel oil sales were 12% lower than the 2 million mt recorded in the second quarter of 2023.
VLSFO sales surged by 10% to 747,000 mt in Q2 2024. Nonetheless, this figure was 18% lower than the 906,000 mt sold in the same period last year.
HSFO continued to be the most popular bunker fuel grade at the port for the second consecutive quarter, with around 825,000 mt sold in Q2 2024. This volume remained largely unchanged from the previous quarter but showed a slight 3% decline compared to the second quarter of 2023.
ULSFO sales decreased by 4% to 170,000 mt from the previous quarter.

- VLSFO: 34%
- HSFO: 39%
- MGO: 13%
- ULSFO: 8%
- MDO: 5%
