On August 29, 2025, Royal Caribbean International officially floated out its newest cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. As the third vessel in the Icon Class series, the ship represents a new benchmark in luxury cruising—combining sheer scale, cutting-edge entertainment, and industry-leading sustainability features.
This float-out ceremony marks a critical transition from assembly to outfitting and sea trials before passenger operations begin.
Size, Comfort, and Design
At 1,196 feet (364.75m) in length and 159 feet (48.47m) in width, Legend of the Seas ranks among the world’s largest cruise ships. The vessel’s parabolic bow design enhances hull stability, reducing motion in rough seas and ensuring a smoother passenger experience.
With 2,800+ cabins, the ship can host 5,600 guests, offering everything from waterparks and pools to Broadway-style performances—transforming the vessel into a true floating city at sea.
Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability lies at the core of Legend of the Seas. Its six dual-fuel engines run on LNG for lower emissions, supported by five bow thrusters and three 20MW azimuthing thrusters for precision manoeuvring.
In addition, fuel cells onboard provide cleaner electricity generation and freshwater production, reducing the ship’s overall carbon footprint. These innovations align with Royal Caribbean’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its fleet by 2035.
Itineraries: Mediterranean & Caribbean
The ship will debut in summer 2026 with Mediterranean sailings ranging from 3 to 13 nights, departing from Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome). Destinations include Naples, Florence/Pisa (La Spezia), Palma de Mallorca, and Marseille.
Following a 13-night transatlantic voyage, Legend of the Seas will reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning year-round Caribbean cruises from November 2026, offering passengers both cultural discovery and tropical relaxation.
Broader Impact on the Cruise Industry
The launch of Legend of the Seas underscores Royal Caribbean’s strategic investment in the Icon Class, with a fourth ship already in construction and options for more. This expansion reflects a bold commitment to innovation, sustainability, and passenger experience, setting a new industry standard.
For the wider market, the milestone strengthens investor confidence and appeals to environmentally conscious travellers seeking luxury without compromising on sustainability.
Why It Matters for Travellers
For passengers, Legend of the Seas delivers the best of both worlds—immersive entertainment, world-class dining, and cutting-edge amenities, combined with a strong focus on eco-friendly travel.
The ship’s launch symbolizes the future of cruising: where comfort, adventure, and environmental responsibility intersect, offering a travel experience that is as exciting as it is sustainable.
