Russia has taken a strong stance against the United States for its blockade of Venezuela, accusing Washington of resorting to tactics reminiscent of piracy and banditry in the Caribbean Sea, reports Marine Insight.
Warning of Regional Destabilisation
Moscow has cautioned that these actions could destabilise the region. However, it also expressed hope that US President Donald Trump’s pragmatic approach might help prevent the situation from spiralling into a larger crisis.
Concerns Over International Law
According to Russia’s foreign ministry, the security situation in the Caribbean has worsened due to US actions against Venezuela. They argue that obstructing maritime activities is akin to seizing property, labelling such practices as outdated and perilous under contemporary international law. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasised that Russia consistently promotes de-escalation and restraint.
Call for Pragmatic Dialogue
Zakharova expressed hope that US leaders will take a sensible approach and strive for solutions that are acceptable to all parties and align with international legal standards.
Support for Venezuela’s Government
Russia reaffirmed its political backing for President Nicolas Maduro’s government, stating its support for Venezuela’s efforts to uphold national sovereignty, safeguard its interests, and ensure stable and secure development.
