Russian shadow fleet’s tanker made a near-marine-misery occurrence along Finland’s coastline, sending the international community back to their worry drums again, reports European Prava.
Near-miss around Kalbådagrund Lighthouse
Finland’s Coast Guard has confirmed that the ship was spotted in international waters last week, not too far off from Finland’s Kalbådagrund lighthouse. “The vessel was heading west, which could have caused it to run aground within ten minutes. After the maritime communications centre informed the vessel of this by radio, it changed course and thus avoided the shoal,” stated the Finnish Coast Guard.
Potential Environmental Catastrophe Averted
Authorities emphasised the serious risk posed by the tanker’s near-grounding. “It could have led to a serious marine environmental catastrophe,” said the Finnish Coast Guard.
This comes after several shadow fleet ships were detected sailing in the Gulf of Finland last week.
Finland Calls for Action Against Shadow Fleet Threat
Following increasing concerns, Finland has urged tough action against Russia’s shadow fleet, particularly following recent events where submarine cables were damaged in the Baltic and North Seas.
Estonia Echoes Concerns
Estonia has also threatened to take tough action against vessels carrying Russian oil, joining Finland’s call for firm action.
