  • Seafarers Unpaid for Over Three Months Appeal for Help.

Egyptian authorities have detained a Russian crude oil tanker because its operator didn’t pay the necessary transit fees for the Suez Canal, as revealed by a crew member’s appeal to the Seafarers’ Union of Russia (SUR). The tanker is currently anchored at the Port of Suez while they sort out the situation, reports Safety4Sea.

Crew Faces Fuel Shortages and Wage Delays

The crew is facing significant shortages of fuel and lubricants, which have sparked concerns about a possible power failure on board. The 22 Russian seafarers have also been without their wages for over three months, leading to an urgent call for help.

Repeated Appeals for Payment

In their latest appeal, the crew stated: “On October 15, our vessel’s crew filed a claim with the employer demanding payment of outstanding wages. As of October 28, the money has still not been transferred. The employer ignores our demands.” The report noted that wage arrears have been a recurring issue, as a similar appeal for help was made in August.

Concerns Over Crew Safety and Vessel Operations

This ongoing detention raises serious worries about the crew’s well-being and the operational safety of the tanker as it remains stuck in Egyptian waters.
