SAAM Towage has successfully executed one of its most complex undertakings to date: the tandem tow of two platform supply vessels (PSVs) across a 13,675-nautical-mile route. The voyage began in Cartagena, Colombia, proceeded to Gulfport, USA, and concluded in Istanbul, Turkey, lasting a total of 113 days.
The operation was led by the tug Sea Trout, which navigated through the challenging Strait of Gibraltar and demonstrated high performance in terms of endurance, towing capacity, and onboard navigation systems. This achievement marks a significant milestone in both SAAM Towage’s operational capabilities and Colombian maritime operations.
“This was a highly demanding mission, not just in terms of technical execution and logistics, but also due to the skill, precision, and experience required,” stated Guillermo Burga, SAAM Towage’s Country Manager for Colombia and Ecuador. “Towing two vessels simultaneously is a rare and intricate task that reflects the trust placed in our crews and our strong commitment to operational safety.”
Rigorous Planning and Execution
Careful planning underpinned the success of the operation. The Sea Trout was selected specifically for its high towing power and long-range autonomy. Crew members were chosen for their extensive experience and underwent additional specialized training, including an advanced sea survival course.
Throughout the journey, SAAM Towage’s Operational Control Center provided round-the-clock monitoring and communication. The company also ensured that crew members stayed connected with their families during the mission, emphasizing crew welfare and safety as a top priority.
