Sailing Through Uncertainty: Resurgent Threats In Malacca Straits

195

The Straits of Malacca, a crucial maritime passage between Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, poses unique challenges for vessels, especially at night. While current threats are limited, concerns arise about potential disruptions in times of conflict, impacting the flow of goods between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

Resurgence of Maritime Disruptions

Despite progress in the 1990s and early 2000s, incidents of piracy and armed attacks in the Straits of Malacca have seen a resurgence in the 2020s. Some attribute this to increased poverty in regional communities following the Covid-19 pandemic. With 62 incidents reported by late October, calls for greater preventive action have emerged, echoing the need for measures akin to those implemented against piracy in the Indian Ocean in the past.
