Saint-Malo: Brittany Ferries’ New Hybrid E-Flexer Ready For Service

The Saint-Malo, the newest addition to Brittany Ferries’ fleet, is en route to Europe and will officially enter service on February 12, 2025. This cutting-edge vessel is part of the E-Flexer series developed by Stena RoRo, showcasing impressive innovations in hybrid technology and sustainability.

Key Features of the Saint-Malo

1. Multi-Fuel and Battery Hybrid System:
   • Equipped with 12 MWh batteries, enabling the vessel to operate emission-free during docking, departure, and port operations.
   • Supports high-speed shore charging (8 MW) for fossil-free port stays.
   • The engines can run on marine diesel (MGO), liquefied natural gas (LNG), biodiesel, and biogas.
   • Capable of travelling at 17.5 knots on battery power alone.
2. Sustainability and Efficiency:
   • Optimized hull, propeller, and rudder designs enhance energy efficiency.
   • The scalable hybrid system allows future conversion to fully battery-powered operations.
   • This design reduces CO2 emissions significantly and complies with current and future international environmental standards.
3. Enhanced Passenger Experience:
   • Features 387 passenger cabins across four decks, the highest cabin capacity in the E-Flexer series.
   • The interior design by Figura Arkitekter AB reflects the cultural essence of the Brittany region.

E-Flexer Series Development

• The Saint-Malo is the fourth of five E-Flexer vessels Brittany Ferries ordered.
• The final vessel in this order will be delivered in January 2025.
• Stena RoRo has delivered 11 E-Flexer vessels so far, with ongoing projects for future vessels, including methanol-ready and battery-hybrid ships for other operators.

Expanding Fleet and Market Position

The Saint-Malo and other E-Flexer vessels are modernizing Brittany Ferries’ fleet, focusing on sustainable operations and energy efficiency. This fleet renewal aligns with the maritime industry’s transition toward reduced emissions and enhanced operational efficiency.

Stena RoRo, collaborating with the CMI Jinling shipyard in Weihai, has ordered a total of 15 E-Flexer vessels along with two New Max RoRo vessels, highlighting its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
