Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), a global leader in shipbuilding and offshore engineering, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OneOcean, the digital solutions provider owned by Lloyd’s Register. The partnership aims to enhance digital and data-driven technologies for the maritime industry, marking a significant step toward smarter, more sustainable ship operations. The MOU was officially signed during the KORMARINE exhibition in Busan, Korea, on 22 October.

Strengthening Collaboration in AI and Data Solutions

Under this MOU, SHI and OneOcean will collaborate on data sharing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence innovations to improve vessel performance and design. The focus will be on developing lifespan performance modelling and advanced voyage optimisation services that incorporate boil-off gas models for SHI-built vessels.

This partnership combines SHI’s shipbuilding expertise with OneOcean’s leadership in digital maritime solutions, enabling both companies to create more accurate and efficient performance models. By leveraging AI and data insights, the collaboration aims to support eco-friendly, intelligent ship operations and future autonomous vessel technologies.

Building on a Shared Vision for Smarter Shipping

The agreement deepens SHI’s long-standing relationship with Lloyd’s Register and highlights OneOcean’s role in advancing digital maritime transformation. OneOcean, formed through the merger of LR OneOcean and Ocean Technologies Group, brings over two decades of experience in voyage optimisation and vessel performance analytics.

According to SHI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Haeki Jang, the partnership reflects SHI’s commitment to delivering digital solutions that add real value for customers. OneOcean’s Managing Director, Andy McKeran, emphasized that the collaboration aligns with their mission to advance “people, planet, and performance” through smarter digital workflows and sustainability-focused innovation.

The SHI–OneOcean partnership represents a powerful alliance driving the maritime industry toward a data-driven and eco-conscious future. By integrating AI, analytics, and vessel performance technologies, the collaboration not only enhances safety and efficiency but also contributes to the development of sustainable, autonomous maritime operations.
