Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is advancing its smart shipyard strategy through an ambitious integration of extended reality (XR) technologies and intelligent robotics, marking a major milestone in the digital evolution of shipbuilding.

The company recently unveiled plans to apply advanced XR systems across its shipyard operations, introducing immersive, high-precision inspection and design review environments. The initiative leverages real-time rendering, hand-tracking, and spatial mapping to enhance ship inspection accuracy and streamline quality assurance.

In parallel, SHI is developing next-generation shipbuilding robots powered by artificial intelligence. These robotic systems will initially focus on automated welding within ship blocks and other challenging environments, eventually expanding to include lightweight mobile and dual-arm robots designed for high-complexity shipyard tasks.

By combining XR and robotics, SHI aims to transform its traditional construction processes into a fully digital, connected ecosystem — improving efficiency, safety, and production precision. The company expects these technologies to significantly reduce inspection time, enhance build quality, and minimise human exposure to high-risk work zones.

This dual-track innovation reflects a broader transformation underway in the shipbuilding sector, as manufacturers adopt Industry 4.0 technologies to strengthen global competitiveness. The integration of immersive reality tools and autonomous systems marks a decisive shift toward smarter, faster, and more sustainable vessel production.

As SHI continues to expand its digital framework, the company envisions a next-generation shipyard where intelligent machines and immersive technologies work seamlessly together — setting new standards for maritime manufacturing excellence.
