Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced a significant contract to build three ultra-large ethane carriers (VLECs) for an Asian shipowner. The contract, valued at 742.2 billion won, further strengthens SHI’s position as a leader in eco-friendly maritime solutions. The vessels are slated for delivery by December 2027.

Order Intake Overview
- SHI’s cumulative order intake for 2024 has reached approximately $7.3 billion (10.6 trillion won) across 36 vessels, achieving 75% of its annual target of $9.7 billion.
- The total orders include a diverse fleet:
- 22 LNG carriers
- 2 Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs)
- 1 Shuttle Tanker
- 4 Medium Tankers
- 4 Container Ships
- 3 Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs)
Eco-Friendly Focus
- Notably, eco-friendly fuel vessels, including LNG and ammonia carriers, comprise 86% of the total orders (31 vessels).
- This aligns with the maritime industry’s shift toward sustainable shipping solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

An SHI representative commented on the increasing demand for eco-friendly ships:
“The trend of ordering eco-friendly fuel-propelled ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is steadily increasing.”
The official further highlighted SHI’s strategy:
“Given our strengths in eco-friendly technology development, we will actively respond to changes in the market environment.”
