Saudi Arabia’s Ports See Significant Growth In Container Traffic And Cargo Handling In 2023

Saudi Arabia’s ports experienced a 14.6 percent increase in container traffic, both inbound and outbound, in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT). This growth is a positive sign for the Kingdom’s ongoing economic diversification efforts.

Increased Container Traffic and Cargo Volume

In 2023, Saudi ports handled 3.4 million TEUs of inbound containers and 2.2 million TEUs of outbound containers. The total cargo volume was 334 million tonnes, with King Fahad Industrial Port in Yanbu handling the largest outbound cargo at 89.8 million tonnes. Jeddah Islamic Port led in inbound cargo, managing 38.9 million tonnes.

Rising Ship Traffic

Ship traffic at Saudi ports increased by 33.8 percent, with a total of 19,082 ships in 2023. King Fahad Industrial Port in Yanbu had the highest number of ships, followed by Jeddah Islamic Port and King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.

Boost in Passenger Traffic

Passenger traffic also saw an 11.5 percent rise, with over 1 million travelers passing through Saudi ports in 2023. Jazan Port handled the largest number of passengers, totaling 484,598.
