In March 2025, the ports under the management of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) demonstrated significant growth in container handling. Volumes reached nearly 700,000 TEUs, specifically 699,928 TEUs, marking a substantial 13.6% increase compared to the 616,000 TEUs handled in March of the previous year (2024), reports Container News.
Surge In Exported Containers
During the specified period, the port experienced a significant surge in exported container volume, increasing by 32% to reach 280,341 TEUs, up from 212,672 TEUs. Imported containers also saw growth, rising by 7.8% to 281,216 TEUs compared to 260,912 TEUs. However, the volume of transshipped containers experienced a slight decrease of 2.9%, totaling 138,371 TEUs, down from 142,495 TEUs.
Overall cargo throughput tonnage, which includes general cargo, solid bulk, and liquid bulk, showed a substantial increase of 8.7%, reaching 21,181,246 tons, compared to 19,488,335 tons in the same period last year. This total comprises 971,850 tons of general cargo, 4,515,924 tons of solid bulk, and a significant 15,693,472 tons of liquid bulk. In contrast, the number of cattle heads received at the ports declined by 9.4%, totaling 870,566 heads, down from 961,131 heads in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Maritime traffic also experienced growth, rising by 6.75% to 1,044 vessels. The number of passengers passing through the port saw a significant increase of 35%, totaling 84,665 passengers. Furthermore, vehicle traffic through the port increased considerably by 33.5%, with 90,271 vehicles handled compared to 67,620 vehicles in the same period last year.
