SC Ports Reports Record Inland & Auto Growth Despite Trade Slowdown

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) has reported robust growth in its inland operations and vehicle volumes, even as global trade activity remains subdued. The performance underscores the port authority’s resilience and its ability to offset softer container trade with strong inland and automotive business, reports Container News.

Inland Terminals Lead the Charge

In September, Inland Port Greer handled 17,818 rail moves, marking an 18% year-on-year increase. The surge was driven by consistent demand from manufacturers and logistics providers in the Upstate region. Similarly, Inland Port Dillon posted an impressive 4,888 rail moves, a 275% rise compared with the same month last year — one of the facility’s strongest performances since its opening.

The growth at these inland terminals highlights the benefits of SC Ports’ intermodal strategy, connecting inland manufacturing and distribution hubs directly to global markets through the Port of Charleston.

Automotive Sector Continues to Shine

The automotive segment also showed resilience amid broader trade headwinds. SC Ports handled 16,122 vehicles at its Columbus Street Terminal in September, representing a 6% year-over-year increase and marking the third consecutive month of growth.

Officials attributed the performance to strong vehicle exports and imports supported by regional manufacturers and new supply chain investments.

Balancing Trade Challenges

Despite global trade pressures and a temporary softening in container volumes linked to tariff-related slowdowns, SC Ports maintained steady throughput during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026. Leaders emphasized that diversification across business lines — including inland rail, automotive, and logistics services — continues to stabilize performance and fuel long-term growth.

Ongoing industrial developments in South Carolina, such as Isuzu’s new production facility in Greenville County, are expected to further strengthen demand for inland and port services. SC Ports continues to invest in infrastructure and technology to handle rising volumes efficiently, ensuring seamless connections between manufacturers and global shipping routes.
