SCA Partners with Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime Pool to Cut Shipping Emissions

11

  • Swedish forest company SCA has joined Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool to comply with EU maritime emissions regulations and reduce fossil fuel use in its fleet.
  • The collaboration allows SCA to offset emissions using bio-LNG, a renewable fuel with 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to fossil alternatives.
  • This step supports SCA’s broader sustainability target of halving transport-related emissions by 2030 and contributes to building fossil-free value chains.

In a strategic move to further its sustainability goals, Swedish forest industry leader SCA has joined Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool—an initiative aimed at helping shipping companies comply with the European Union’s maritime emissions regulations. The decision reflects SCA’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, particularly in transport, which remains its largest source of fossil emissions.

Aligning Logistics with Climate Goals

SCA is renowned for its climate-positive operations, which include carbon uptake from forests, long-term carbon storage in wood-based products, and the substitution of fossil materials with renewable alternatives. With a goal to cut fossil emissions by 50% by 2030 (from a 2019 baseline), the company has already achieved near-zero emissions from industrial processes. Tackling transport emissions is now a central focus.

SCA operates a fleet of three Ro-Ro vessels that carry the Group’s products—including pulp, paper, and wood goods—to European ports. These vessels also transport goods for external clients, extending the environmental impact of any improvements across a wider customer base.

Pooling for Progress

Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool offers a collaborative route to emissions reduction by enabling companies to participate in a shared compliance mechanism. The program uses waste-based liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) in dual-fuel vessels to generate verifiable emissions reductions on behalf of pool participants.

Bio-LNG is a renewable and low-emission fuel, offering an average 90% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gases compared to fossil fuels. By joining the pool, SCA gains access to this sustainable fuel indirectly, ensuring its shipping activities comply with new EU carbon intensity requirements.

Credibility and Verification

A key driver behind SCA’s choice was Gasum’s strong industry reputation and the credibility of its compliance solutions. “We are very pleased that SCA has chosen to join Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum. “Pooling enables both our companies to make meaningful progress in reducing maritime emissions and building fossil-free supply chains.”

Gasum relies on DNV-certified technology to accurately track and verify fuel use and emissions data across its pool. This ensures full transparency and regulatory compliance under the EU’s FuelEU Maritime framework, which permits voluntary emissions pooling among ships as a way to meet fleet-wide reduction targets.

A Model for Maritime Decarbonisation

This partnership showcases how industry leaders can combine efforts to achieve climate targets through innovative, collective solutions. With maritime transport contributing significantly to global emissions, initiatives like the FuelEU Maritime pool may prove vital in accelerating the sector’s transition toward sustainability, particularly for companies like SCA, whose logistics are integral to their supply chains.

As the regulatory landscape tightens and demand for low-carbon transport grows, collaborations like this could become standard practice in shaping a cleaner, more resilient shipping industry.
