EGCS

This year, 150 containerships were fitted with exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) units, bringing the total number of ships equipped with scrubbers to 850 as of December 20.

The scrubber-equipped fleet now has a capacity of 7.52 Mteu, out of a total global capacity of 25.34 Mteu.

Scrubber-equipped tonnage is used by all of the top nine carriers by capacity, which accounts for 83% of global capacity.

However, the amount of each carrier’s fleet fitted with scrubbers varies drastically, with HMM (83%) and Evergreen (69%) having the largest percentage of their fleets equipped with scrubbers, and COSCO having only 11%.

MSC has the most scrubber-equipped capacity, with well over 2 Mteu, followed by one-time scrubber sceptic Maersk with just under 1.5 Mteu.

Scrubbers have become more profitable this year, especially for bunker buyers in Singapore, where the HSFO/VLSFO spread is now over $180/mt, up from $90/mt at the start of the year.
