On August 19, the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) made an exciting announcement about new partnerships with Japanese companies ITOCHU Corporation, Orascom Construction, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) aimed at boosting green fuel bunkering projects. These agreements were officially signed during the 12th session of the Egyptian-Japanese Business Council and the Egyptian-Japanese Investment Forum, which took place in Tokyo, reports Manifold Times.

Ammonia Bunkering Projects

The first agreement, inked with ITOCHU Corporation and Orascom Construction, focuses on designing, developing, and operating integrated facilities to supply ships with ammonia as a marine fuel at SCZONE’s ports in Sokhna and East Port Said. This initiative aligns with SCZONE’s commitment to sustainable energy in maritime transport and plays a vital role in reducing emissions.

Green Hydrogen Collaboration

The second agreement, signed with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to strengthen collaboration in the area of green hydrogen for ship bunkering. This partnership emphasises sharing knowledge and information, boosting demand, and exploring future applications of clean energy.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted Japan’s significance as a development partner, underscoring Egypt’s strong focus on the renewable energy sector. He expressed Egypt’s ambition to emerge as a regional and global leader in green hydrogen production and export, in line with global sustainability trends.

Engagement with Sumitomo Corporation

During the forum, Waleid Gamal El-Dien, Chairman of the General Authority for SCZONE, engaged in discussions with Sumitomo Corporation about creating a new industrial zone under the industrial developer model. This initiative aims to attract Asian investments and enhance cooperation in green fuel bunkering.

Broader Cooperation in Clean Energy

The talks with Sumitomo also covered collaboration on various ship bunkering fuel types, as well as initiatives for green hydrogen production. These efforts target export markets, ship bunkering applications, and decarbonisation of heavy industries such as steel.
