In a recent development ABB has announced that they have won a contract to supply their power and propulsion technology for Seabourn’s two expedition cruise ship newbuilds, says a press release published on their website.
About The Contract
The contract, announced at Seatrade Cruise Global, covers two 170mtr ships due for delivery to Seattle-based Seabourn from Italian yard T. Mariotti, in June 2021 and May 2022.
This technology will be integrated into Seabourn’s 23,000gt ships combining main generators, switchboard, convertors, bow thruster motors and a remote-control system in a single package, plus twin 6MW Azipod propulsion units.
Designed For Ultra-Luxury Polar Expeditions
Built to Polar Code 6 hull specifications, the 264-passenger capacity vessels have been designed for the ultra-luxury polar expedition market. ABB’s Azipod propulsion system frees up space on board, allowing these vessels to carry additional crafts such as kayaks, Zodiacs and a pair of submarines.
How will it help?
“Using Azipod propulsion in conjunction with our PC6 ice-strengthened hull will provide excellent maneuverability and operational control in the polar and other regions around the globe,” said Rick Meadows, president of Seabourn.
“This creates lower levels of vibration, which is a major benefit for guest comfort and marine life. As a UNESCO World Heritage cruise partner, Seabourn also values the fact that these units enable sustainable operations.”
What’s different in these vessels?
To date, more than 20 exploration cruise ships have been specified with this propulsion. The vessels will be connected to ABB’s Ability Collaborative Operations Centre infrastructure, which monitors the performance of this technology on board and remotely connects operators with ABB experts —something that is particularly important for ships operating in remote areas.

ABB’s power and propulsion package have also been integrated into Carnival Corp.’s first China newbuild.
