Seafarer Critically Injured After Fall into Cargo Hold at Algeciras Port

12

A serious onboard accident occurred earlier this week when a seafarer fell approximately 16 feet into a cargo hold aboard a container ship docked at Algeciras Port, reports Marine Insight.

Emergency Response Activated

The port’s maritime rescue coordination center received the distress call around 08:30 local time. Due to cargo obstructing aerial access, a search-and-rescue vessel was dispatched instead of a helicopter. The vessel’s crane was used to lift the injured crew member from the cargo hold, and he was safely transferred to shore for medical attention.

The injured seafarer was conscious during the rescue but sustained serious injuries. He was immediately transported to local emergency medical services for further treatment.

Operational Challenges and Safety Concerns

The incident highlights the dangers of working within enclosed spaces aboard vessels and the complexity of emergency operations in confined cargo areas. Cargo obstructions prevented direct helicopter access, requiring rescuers to employ crane-assisted and high-angle recovery techniques.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall. The case underscores the importance of strict adherence to onboard safety procedures, improved risk assessments during cargo operations, and ensuring rapid-response readiness for similar emergencies.
