Seafarer Attempts Suicide in a Stranded Ship
A seafarer on board Swiber Explorer, one of three vessels managed by Singapore’s Vallianz Holdings and stranded at an anchorage off Dubai has been plagued with troubles for some time now. The vessel has come under spotlight now after a crew member aboard the ship attempted suicide by jumping off the vessel.
The vessels Swiber Explorer, along with Swiber Navigator and Swiber Sandefjord, have all been left to fend for themselves off Dubai since June and the crew members are now serving their eighth month on-board the vessel.
The Indonesian seafarer, who attempted to jump from the Swiber Explorer, was held back by crew members who noticed his unusual behaviour. He had suffered from the death of his father earlier this month. The ship’s captain requested that he be sent home to grieve on October 17.
Ken Leow, crewing manager at Vallianz Offshore Marine, was to request a death certificate and family card and warn: “No guarantee he can sign off”. Despite sending the requested information via the Jakarta crewing agent the same day, the vessel has yet to receive any further response from Vallianz to allow the man to return home.
