Onboard Maritime aims to democratize seafarer training by introducing a PC-based solution, foregoing the need for expensive VR headsets. This move focuses on affordability and accessibility for all, reports Seatrade.

Cost-Effective Approach

Using a gaming laptop and a simple £10 X-Box controller instead of VR headsets significantly reduces costs, making quality education more feasible for a wider audience.

“The whole point about this, that we set out is to make quality education accessible to everyone. So really, we are focused on the cost,” Ferguson explains.

Unity-Based Development

The Virtual Training Ship is built on the Unity game engine by skilled programmers, offering an “adaptive learning” environment that allows trainees to engage in various scenarios. Trainees can dismantle and reassemble equipment pieces to enhance their depth of knowledge.

Customization and Realism

The software can be tailored to specific vessels, embedding company procedures and replicating real-world scenarios for a more immersive learning experience.

Collaboration and Curriculum Alignment

Onboard Maritime partners with South Shields Marine School to align their training materials with the school’s curriculum and syllabus, ensuring relevance and applicability.

Mainstream Availability

A more accessible version of the software will be launched on the Steam gaming platform, combining educational elements with gamification to cater to a broader audience interested in shipping, falling under the category of serious or applied games.
