Seasonal Wave Warning From Namibian Ports For Walvis Bay

The Namibian Ports Authority has issued a notice to inform operators of vessels moored alongside the port of Walvis Bay about the expected seasonal wave surges, with heights above 2.0 meters, from 03 to 16 August 2024, according to Safety4Sea.

The Authority warns that this may cause surging alongside with a possibility of mooring snapping, particularly at berths 7 to 9 and the New Container Terminal. Vessel masters, owners, and agents are advised to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant during this period.

Port Regulations

  • Regulation 51 (1): The Master of a vessel within the jurisdiction of Namport is responsible for the safety of the vessel at all times. This responsibility cannot be waived or transferred.
  • Regulation 37 (1): A vessel within the port must have adequate personnel on board to manage moorings, gangways, and other shore connections.

Safety Measures

  • Immediate Reporting: Report any issues related to the surge to Port Control without delay via VHF Channel 16/12 or telephone +264 64 208 2264/2265.
  • Local Warnings: Port Control will issue local navigational warnings on VHF Channel 12 when adverse weather conditions are anticipated.
  • Weather Updates: Masters are required to have the latest weather forecasts readily available on the bridge at all times.
