Queensland’s Seatransport and Houston’s Deployable Energy have partnered with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to create nuclear power generation systems for maritime use, such as strategic response ships sailing in far-off areas, reports LR.

Micro Modular Reactors Powering Amphibious Vessels for Disaster Relief

The collaboration plans to employ micromodular reactor (MMR) technology, where two to five 1MWe capacity MMRs will power a 73-metre-long amphibious vessel. The vessel will be utilized for emergency response and disaster relief operations in inaccessible regions. The nuclear-powered vessel will be able to run for 8-10 years on a single refuelling and can supply power to the shore grid of the affected region whenever in the dock.

Lloyd’s Register to Drive Safety and Quality Protocols

Lloyd’s Register, one of the world’s leading professional services groups, will drive the program to make sure that all safety standards and quality protocols are strictly adhered to during the course of developing the project. LR’s in-depth knowledge in maritime and nuclear fields will play an important role in the success of the project.

Expertise in Maritime and Nuclear Safety

Claudene Sharp-Patel, LR’s Global Technical Director, emphasized the importance of nuclear technology in maritime applications. She stated: “As nuclear technology progresses towards maritime applications, LR is uniquely positioned to help develop these initiatives. We bring our extensive history in maritime and nuclear safety, providing a strong foundation for safe, insurable, and scalable nuclear-powered shipping. Our extensive experience with small modular reactors in the defence sector further demonstrates our commitment to safety and innovation.”

Agreement Signed at LR’s Australia Advisory Committee Meeting

The partnership was officially introduced at LR’s recent Australia Advisory Committee Meeting. Remko Hottentot, LR Commercial Manager – Australasia, signed the agreement with Australian partners, which is a crucial step in the creation of nuclear-powered maritime solutions.

Exploring Nuclear’s Role in Maritime Decarbonisation

LR’s Fuel for Thought: Nuclear is a detailed examination of the role and potential for nuclear power in maritime decarbonisation today and in the future. The report is one of LR’s award-winning series of industry-leading reports on alternative ship fuels, including emerging technologies, policy developments, and opportunities in the sector.
