  • A 25,000m³ ammonia bunker vessel has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
  • The design enables dedicated ammonia bunkering, optional carrier functionality, and dual-fuel flexibility.
  • Enhanced safety systems and long operational range make it a milestone in maritime decarbonisation.

A Singapore-headquartered marine engineering firm has announced that it has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its 25,000m³ ammonia bunker vessel. Developed by its marine and deepwater technology division, the design uses IMO Type C containment to safely manage liquefied ammonia storage and transport.

Technical and Operational Capabilities

The vessel is built for dedicated ammonia bunkering, with an option to serve as a carrier if required. It is designed to operate with a deadweight tonnage of 19,500 mt at a speed of 14 knots and can sail for 55 days without refuelling.Key safety features include an advanced architecture that prevents open-deck leaks, aligning with IMO standards, the IGC Code, and ABS regulations. The vessel is also equipped with integrated systems that allow operators to switch seamlessly between ammonia and diesel fuel, ensuring operational flexibility.

Step Towards a Zero-Carbon Future

According to the company, the AiP validates both the technical feasibility and regulatory compliance of the vessel, providing a foundation for detailed engineering and eventual construction. This milestone is seen as a vital step in supporting timely delivery and advancing maritime energy transition, laying the groundwork for robust fuel infrastructure to support a zero-carbon fleet.
