  • Seatrium Offshore Technology has won an international tender from International Maritime Industries (IMI) to supply equipment and the license for a self-elevating drilling unit.
  • This comes after ARO Drilling, a joint venture between Aramco and Valaris, and IMI agreed to build a new jack-up drilling rig named Kingdom 3. This will be the first rig to be constructed in Saudi Arabia.

Singapore’s Seatrium Offshore Technology, the offshore jack-up designer for Seatrium Group, has beaten off international competition to supply equipment and license for a LeTourneau Super 116E Class self-elevating drilling unit (SE-MODU), Kingdom 3, for International Maritime Industries (IMI), the largest shipyard in the Middle East, North Africa (MENA) region.

The value of this landmark contract was not divulged.

New rig job lands on Seatrium’s table

Seatrium said this milestone marks the historic beginning of newbuild construction in IMI since the yard’s opening and underscores the start of an ambitious long-term partnership with IMI to construct offshore jack-ups in Saudi Arabia.

The Singapore contractor added it provides clients the flexibility of building vessels in its yards or drawing from its suite of jack-up designs to provide rig kits to others to fulfill local content requirements. The chosen design will be the LeTourneau Super 116E Class and is part of the next generation of jack-up designs customised for operational requirements within the MENA region.

These rigs will be outfitted with 343 feet of leg and 1.5-million-pound hook load while utilising advanced cyber systems. This deal marks the 44th order for the LeTourneau Super 116 series of jack-ups.

It is 70 years since Seatrium designed and built the world’s first independent leg jack-up drilling rig, and it has designed and been involved in the construction of more than half of all jack-up rigs in service and 65% of the jack-ups operating in the Middle East.

These orders underscore the Kingdom’s (Saudi Arabia) 2030 Vision for advanced technology, sustainability and independence in offshore drilling,” said Seatrium.

IMI is a joint venture between national oil company Saudi Aramco, Bahri, Lamprell and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and has its flagship facility at Ras Al Khair.
