September Stabilizes Port Of NY And NJ’s Total Volume

  • The Port of New York and New Jersey experienced a significant 21.6% decrease in total volume in September, marking a departure from the record-setting years of 2021 and 2022.
  • Import volumes also declined in September, with a 19.9% drop, contributing to a 21.5% decrease in imports since the beginning of the year, compared to the same period in 2022.

Declining Trends

In September, the Port of New York and New Jersey reported a 21.6% decrease in total volume, with 660,553 TEUs (363,853 containers) compared to 842,219 TEUs (465,685 containers) in the previous year. The total volume for the year through September was 5,789,116 TEUs (3,211,306 containers), reflecting a decline after record-setting years in 2021 and 2022.

Imports in September were down 19.9%, with 339,033 TEUs (186,994 containers) compared to 423,424 TEUs (234,352 containers) in September 2022. Since January, imports reached 2,957,589 TEUs (1,642,028 containers) compared to 3,768,729 TEUs (2,086,350 containers) during the same period in 2022, marking a 21.5% decrease.

Export and Rail 

In September, exports at the Port of New York and New Jersey decreased by 2.8%, with 100,379 TEUs (54,032 containers). From January through September, exports dropped by 1.6% compared to the same period in 2022. 

Export empties also decreased significantly, down 30.1% in September and 28.8% year-to-date. Import empties, on the other hand, increased by 6.8% from January through September.

Rail volume fell by 12.6% in September and decreased by 13.1% year-to-date compared to 2022. Auto volume in September increased by 2.8%, with 32,787 autos moving through the port, but year-to-date, it remained 11.5% lower than in 2022.
