A Portuguese-flagged container ship experienced harsh weather conditions off the southern coast of Portugal on March 20, which led to a cargo shift. Around 15 to 20 containers were lost near Cape St. Vincent, in Portuguese waters, reports Maritime Bell.

Redirection to Vigo Due to Docking Constraints

Because of its large size and deep draft, docking at Portugal’s Leixões port was not possible. Consequently, the operator looked for an alternative port and asked for access to Vigo, Spain.

Arrival in Vigo for Safety Inspection

The ship arrived at Vigo on March 21, where docking permission was given by the Maritime Authority. Photographs taken at the port reveal several containers overhanging the starboard side close to the stern, making further movement impossible.

Port Authorities Plan Cargo Removal Operation

Carlos Botana, Vigo Port Authority President, confirmed that the ship docked successfully at the Guixar Container Terminal, operated by Termavi. Port authorities are now formulating a safety plan to either secure or lift the displaced containers with a mobile crane for the sensitive operation.

Officials have confirmed that none of the misplaced or lost cargo presents a dangerous threat to safety or the environment.

Unpredictable Timeline for Departure

The length of stay in Vigo is uncertain. Evaluating possible damage and relocating the containers will take time. The ship had left Piraeus, Greece, and was en route to Liverpool, UK, at the time of the accident.
