  • NYK Line received the eco-friendly SG Twilight from JMU.
  • The vessel cuts CO2 by 25-30% and achieves a 40% reduction in EEDI.
  • SG Twilight joins NYK’s Sail GREEN brand for sustainable shipping.

Japanese shipping giant NYK Line has taken delivery of the LNG-powered dual-fuel dry bulk carrier SG Twilight. It was constructed by Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU). The vessel was built to significantly reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. It is part of NYK’s push toward net-zero carbon shipping under its Sail GREEN initiative, reports Offshore Energy.

Next-Gen Eco-Friendly Bulker Joins NYK Fleet

The 210,933 dwt Capesize bulker SG Twilight was officially delivered on February 14, 2025, at JMU’s Tsu shipyard in Mie prefecture.

The vessel, measuring 299.99 meters in length and 50 meters in breadth, boasts a draft of 18.43 meters and a gross tonnage of 110,334 GT.

Significant Emission Reductions and Sustainability

By operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of traditional heavy fuel oil, SG Twilight emits almost no sulfur oxides (SOx) and reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25-30%.

Additionally, it surpasses energy efficiency standards, achieving over 40% reduction in the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for greenhouse gas emissions.

Cutting-Edge Engine Technology

The bulker is powered by the WinGD 7X62DF-2.1 two-stroke slow-speed engine, which features iCER (intelligent control by exhaust gas recycling) technology. This technology enhances fuel efficiency and cuts methane slip by 50%.

JMU representatives highlighted that the low-pressure main engine simplifies the fuel gas supply system and reduces overall power consumption.

Smart Fuel Utilization and Energy-Saving Features

SG Twilight makes use of natural boil-off gas (N-BOG) from LNG evaporation, reducing waste while enhancing fuel efficiency.

It also integrates JMU’s proprietary energy-saving devices, including the LEADGE bow, SURF-BULB, ALV-Fin, SSD (Super Stream Duct), and a twisted rudder (Rupas), further improving its environmental footprint.

Part of NYK’s Sail GREEN Vision

SG Twilight joins NYK’s Sail GREEN brand, an initiative to cut emissions across various shipping divisions.

Originally launched for the Car Transportation Division, the initiative expanded in April 2022 to include other sectors. It reinforces NYK’s ambition for net-zero emissions by 2050.

A Growing LNG-Powered Fleet

NYK’s commitment to LNG-fueled vessels is evident in its growing green fleet.

The first two ships under the new initiative were the Plumeria Leader and Sakura Leader, both LNG-powered pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs).

Predecessor Sets the Stage for SG Twilight

In February 2024, NYK and JMU introduced SG Ocean, the first LNG-powered Capesize bulker built in Japan.

The 210,000 dwt vessel was deployed under a long-term consecutive voyage charter contract with JFE Steel Corporation. It transported iron ore and coal between Australia and Japan.
