  • Shanghai Port has completed its first ship-to-ship bunkering of green methanol, demonstrating the maturity of China’s domestic green fuel supply chain.
  • The COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, China’s first domestically built methanol dual-fuel containership, received 1,000 tonnes of green methanol fuel.
  • This breakthrough positions Shanghai as a key hub for sustainable shipping, supported by robust infrastructure and regulatory cooperation.

Shanghai Port has achieved a major milestone by completing its first ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering of green methanol fuel. This operation represents a significant leap toward cleaner maritime operations and highlights the effectiveness of China’s domestically integrated green methanol supply chain. The COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, the country’s first domestically constructed methanol dual-fuel containership, received 1,000 tonnes of green methanol via at-sea fuel transfer, according to Logistics Middle East.

Integration of the Domestic Green Methanol Supply Chain

The bunkering process was overseen by Shengang International Petroleum Storage and Transportation Company, located on Yangshan Island. The company handled inventory management and ensured safe and timely delivery. This event marks the realisation of a fully domestic and closed-loop supply chain, encompassing methanol production, storage, transportation, and bunkering.

Infrastructure Supporting Green Fueling

Yangshan Port now houses a dedicated methanol storage facility with the capacity to support the increasing demand for alternative marine fuels. Since the initial batch of green methanol was bunkered in March 2025, stakeholders have been working together to streamline the process and enable regular green fuel bunkering services at the port.

Strategic Support from Regulatory Bodies

This progress has been supported by strong cooperation between government agencies and energy companies. Border inspection and regulatory authorities have worked closely with port operators and fuel suppliers to simplify procedures, enhance operational efficiency, and promote sustainable shipping practices.

Shanghai’s Role in Global Green Shipping

Shanghai’s successful bunkering of green methanol strengthens its position as a leading global maritime centre. With the city retaining its third-place spot in the Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index for the sixth consecutive year, Shanghai is steadily advancing as a hub for green shipping innovation and logistics.
